Pastele FAQS
Pasteles are Puerto Rican Tamales. In Puerto Rico, pasteles are a cherished traditional culinary recipe and are very labor intensive to make. This dish is mainly served around holidays and special occasions. The masa consists of a combination of green bananas, potatoes and seasoned with liquid from the meat mixture, milk, and annatto oil. The meat is prepared as a stew, slow cooking for several hours. Assembling a pastele involves a sheet of aluminum foil, banana leaf and annatto oil on the leaf. The masa is then placed on banana leaf and assembled, adding meat mixture. Once made, pasteles can either be steamed or cooked in boiling water for an hour and a half  or frozen for up to 2 months for later use.

Pasteles are usually served with a Puerto Rican rice called Arroz Con Gandules. Arroz con gandules is a combination of rice, gandules, onions, peppers and other ingredients, cooked in the same pot with Puerto Rican-style sofrito. This is the signature dish of Puerto Rican culture and also has become very popular throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
